How we work

Four stages. One contract.
No hand-offs between studios.

Most soft-goods projects die in the gap between the designer, the patent attorney, and the factory. We close that gap by running all three ourselves.

01

Discovery

One working session. We pressure-test your concept against cost, materials, and minimums before you spend a cent on samples.

Week 1
02

Design & patent

CAD, pattern-making, and a utility or design patent filing where there's something worth protecting. You own the IP outright.

Week 2 to 4
03

Sampling

First-pattern, fit-sample, pre-production. Three rounds baked in. You get factory-floor video of every stitch.

Week 4 to 8
04

Production

Inspection through the run, freight booked through our forwarder at our rate, and one point of contact the whole way. No surprises at the port.

What we do

Three disciplines, one contract.

Design it, protect it, build it. That is the whole engagement, and it is run by the same people from first sketch to the container on the water.

Product design

CAD, pattern-making, materials sourcing, and construction engineering for soft goods.

Patent & IP

Utility and design patents, trademarks, and the enforcement side most studios never touch. You own everything.

  • Prior art searches
  • Filing & prosecution
  • Trademarks & enforcement

Manufacturing

Vetted factories, direct relationships, factory-direct rates. We manage the floor so you are not managing it from another timezone.

  • Audited suppliers
  • Weekly floor video
  • Factory-direct pricing
Coordinated under the same contract

Sampling and inspection, freight and customs, packaging and launch assets. We line these up and manage them so you are dealing with one contract instead of six vendors.

Proof of concept

2XSR is our own brand. We built it the same way.

2XSR In-house brand · Fitness / Tactical

Designed, patented, enforced, licensed, and sold since 2018.

Before XL Ovation existed as a studio, the method was already running on our own product. 2XSR was founded in 2018 as a fitness and tactical gear brand. We designed it, filed and won utility patents on it, registered the trademarks, defended those patents against copies, licensed the IP, and sold thousands of units. Everything we do for your product, we have already done for ours.

Founder

The person who did it first, on his own product.

If I could go back, I'd hire someone exactly like me. It would have saved years and thousands of dollars. Instead I learned product development, patent strategy, and enforcement the hard way, one expensive mistake at a time. I started this company so you don't have to.

Paul Bassoo has been designing and manufacturing soft goods since 2018, when he founded 2XSR, the fitness and tactical brand that is still XL Ovation's proof of concept. He splits his time between Toronto and Ho Chi Minh City, and he has taken his own products through the whole path: design, utility patents, trademarks, enforcement, licensing, and thousands of units sold.

He wrote the books on it, literally. Product Development Mistake is the real story of how one bad decision nearly sank a fitness gear brand. His second book is a step-by-step path from idea to filed patent, without a big legal team.

FAQ

The questions founders always ask in the first call.

If yours isn't here, use the project form below and ask away.

It depends on the product. Simple bags and pouches run at lower minimums than technical packs, because the tooling and sampling math is different. Tell us what you are making and we will give you the real floor for that build rather than a number that sounds good on a website.
Yes. Everything (the patent, the CAD, the patterns, the molds, the factory relationships) is assigned to you in the contract. If we part ways you can walk the files across the street.
A sourcing agent takes a commission on your factory invoice, which you never see. We charge a flat engagement fee, show you the actual vendor invoice, and make nothing on the production run. Your incentive and ours are aligned from day one.
Yes, as long as they pass our audit. Some existing-factory relationships survive that visit and some do not; where they do not, we help you exit without a contract mess.
We have taken our own brand through utility patents, trademarks, enforcement against copies, and licensing. That is the part most design studios and factories cannot do, and it is why founders come to us with something worth protecting.
Your submission is covered by our Idea Submission and Confidentiality Agreement from the moment you send it, whether or not you have filed a patent. You keep full ownership, and a copy of both your submission and the agreement is emailed to you automatically for your records.
